Waarom SPF het hele jaar door essentieel is voor je huid

Why SPF is essential for your skin all year round

At Prescription, SPF is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine. We recommend using SPF daily, all year round. During Skin Cancer Awareness Month in May, we pay extra attention to this, as good sun protection is essential for healthy skin.

As soon as the first rays of sun appear in spring, many people become more aware of the importance of good SPF. However, protection against UV radiation is not only important in summer. Even on cloudy days and in winter, your skin is exposed to harmful radiation daily.

Why is SPF so important?

The sun has many positive effects on our bodies. Sunlight stimulates vitamin D production, supports the immune system, and helps regulate your biological clock. Additionally, sunlight increases serotonin production, which provides more energy and a better mood.

At the same time, UV rays can also damage the skin. Therefore, it is important to use an SPF that protects against both UV-A and UV-B radiation.

UV-A radiation: skin aging and pigmentation spots

UV-A stands for UltraViolet A. The letter “A” is often associated with aging. This radiation penetrates deep into the skin and affects collagen and elastin. This can lead to wrinkles, skin aging, and pigmentation spots.

An SPF with UV-A filters helps absorb and reflect this radiation, better protecting the skin against premature skin aging.

UV-B radiation: sunburn and skin damage

UV-B stands for UltraViolet B. The “B” stands for burning. This radiation acts more on the skin's surface and is responsible for sunburn.

In addition, UV-B radiation can cause DNA damage and plays an important role in the development of skin cancer. UV-B filters protect the skin by absorbing and reflecting this radiation.

Always choose a broad-spectrum SPF

A good SPF offers broad-spectrum protection. This means that the product protects against both UV-A and UV-B radiation. This ensures your skin is optimally protected against skin aging, pigmentation, and sun damage.

Protection against blue light

Besides UV radiation, there is now a lot of attention for blue light. This light comes from phones, laptops, and screens, among other sources. Research shows that prolonged exposure to blue light can cause oxidative stress in the skin.

Oxidative stress creates free radicals that can accelerate skin aging. Fortunately, many modern SPF products offer protection against blue light in addition to UV protection.

Ingredients such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide (as in our Shield Cream), and Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (Tinosorb S in SPF 50 Drops) help provide extra skin protection.

PRO TIP: Combine SPF with antioxidants

Always combine your SPF with antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and iron oxides. SPF protects the skin from harmful UV radiation, while antioxidants neutralize free radicals caused by sun exposure. This way, you optimally support the skin and help prevent skin aging.

Do’s for using SPF

Use SPF every day

Even when the sun is not visible, UV radiation reaches the skin. Daily protection is therefore essential, all year round.

Reapply SPF multiple times a day

Even with SPF 50, it is important to reapply your protection throughout the day, especially with prolonged sun exposure.

Intensive treatments can also be done in summer

Virtually all skin treatments can also be performed during the summer period. Correct use of SPF and avoiding prolonged sun exposure remain important.

Choose an SPF that suits your skin type

Sensitive skin often responds better to mineral filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Do you have oilier skin? Then opt for a light water-based SPF.

Use SPF as the last step in your routine

First apply your serums, actives, and moisturizer. Always use SPF as the last step of your skincare routine so that the filters can optimally do their work on the skin.
